In an attempt to shove a few summer dresses into a tightly squeezed collection of sweaters the other day, I realized it was time to spring clean my closet. I will be the first to admit that I am bad bad baaaddd at taking the time to do this. Apparently I get attached to clothes and have a hard time getting rid of things. I was slightly concerned for my mental health after realizing how many things I kept through high school for no reason at all! I ended up packing two giant trash bags full of sweaters to stay out of my way till winter, and 3 large bags to take to the consignment shop! In the spirit of spring cleaning I thought I would share the 5 biggest tips that helped me get through this traumatic event.
- Start backwards by removing the items you know you want to keep first, then weed down from there.
- Remember that if didn’t wear it this season, you probably won’t next season.
- Pack away everything that is out of season to feel less overwhelmed when looking at your closet.
- Get rid of pieces that you don’t have things to pair with, or that still have the tags on them. No questions asked. (I am very bad at this one :)…I mean that skirt I found at gap that one time that was adorable, I just needed to find the right top for… ya feel?)
- When putting things back in your closet put the hangers in backyards. As you wear things you will put them away with the hangers in correctly. At one glance you will be able to see what you have and haven’t worn.
Hope this helps some of you in your ventures to live a clutter-free life. I know I’ve got a long way to go!
