Happy Monday everyone! I am so excited to be back with another Babe for Brunch! Shelby is. so. talented. I have had the privilege of working with her several different times, and am so grateful I have! (check out this post for more!) She is absolutely wonderful to work with and is so kind! Not to mention she has fabulous hair, and her daughter Gretta is adorable!! I am so grateful she has agreed to have brunch with us!
Introduce yourself! Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Shelby – wife, mommy, small business owner, floral designer, wedding planner and blogger. I own The Day’s Design (www.eventsbythedaysdesign.com
What are your favorite brunch foods? Any recipes to share?
Before we had Gretta, my husband and I loved making Sunday brunch after church every weekend. Breakfast quesodillas and bloody mary’s were always our go-to favorites. It’s been awhile since I’ve celebrated brunch but I always enjoy a good bloody mary bar or mimosa and definitely wouldn’t turn away a gooey cinnamon roll or my mom’s sour cream coffee cake. As far as having any recipes to share, I’m a little spoiled since my husband is a chef, I let him do the cooking.
What does an average day look like for you?
I work from a home office, which some days is a blessing and some days a little more of a curse as I struggle to leave work behind. I’m able to keep my daughter home with me during these quieter winter months, which keeps life very interesting. I can’t really say there’s such a thing as an “average” day. Some days are full of errands, gathering floral supplies and vendor meetings. Other days I work in my pj’s answering emails and dreaming up new design proposals. On any given day, you might find me sloshing around flower buckets, foraging through my neighborhood gathering greens or sketching up my next vision for a fabulous styled shoot – all with Gretta and Polly Pocket (my cocker spaniel) by my side.
What is your favorite part of your job?
This past spring I added floral services to my list of offerings. It was a fantasy that I’d had for awhile and kept saying that “someday” I would add. It’s funny how someday can quickly get out of control and be this unattainable time that we never seem able to reach. So I finally took the leap and I cannot believe it took me so long! Learning about flowers, examining their colors and textures, discovering more blooms and creating new floral recipes is quickly becoming my favorite part of my job, and then pair that with the look on the bride’s face when she proudly walks that bouquet down the aisle to meet her groom, pure magic.
What are three must-have items for you?
On a wedding day I must have my black bag — which is kind of a cheat answer since it has just about everything a girl and floral designer could ask for. My sister calls it my Mary Poppins bag, it contains just about every imaginable wedding day need and you never know what I might pull out. On a more regular basis, I cannot live without hairspray, a great comb for backcombing and coffee. I must have coffee and big hair.
Any guilty pleasures?
I must admit, the first things that come to mind are food — chocolate, donuts with sprinkles and Stromboli are my best friends.
If you could have brunch with anybody who would it be?
My grandma. She passed away in January 2012 and I miss her so much. I used to spend my summers with her on the shores of Lake Leelanau. She always supported me and was a great cribbage player. Although if I had brunch with her, it would probably just be toast with peanut butter, which is what she ate every morning.
