Here we are, the first post. Let’s dig in and get real. If you are not sure why I’m talking about this today, click here to read the introductory post to this new series and why it is so important to me.
Today we are going to talk about work. Why it matters to God, why it should matter to us, and how we should approach it as small business owners. We are gonna start by going way back to the beginning (a very good place to start, right??)
Despite how we may feel some days, work was not a part of the fall. Work came in the beginning, along with creation, before sin was introduced to the story. I don’t believe that work was meant to be frustrating or grueling, that was not a part of His original design. Don’t let that blind you from the fact that in the beginning there was work and it was good.
Let’s take a looksee.
“Then God said, ‘let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground’. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground” Genesis 1:26-28
If you ask me, it sounds like originally mankind had the longest to do list of all. This is the earth, fill it, and rule over it. Easy enough, right? The difference is that sin was not yet a factor. Imagine work, your day with a long to-do list and a cup of coffee ready to start…but without the element of sin. You are free from worry, stress, and the anxiety of getting it all done. Fear doesn’t exist. It’s just you, peacefully in God’s presence, ready to do the work He has given you. That is what we see in beginning…maybe minus the coffee. ;).
If work started before the fall then we have to know it is important to Him. So therefore, how we steward work has to be important to Him as well.
Maybe your job is taking care of people in a hospital or taking care of tiny people in your home. Maybe it is tending to your schoolwork, or sitting in a cubical. No matter what your job is, we can be confident that it is important to God, and a platform where we can honor Him.
Next week we are going to talk about what our future as workers looks like, which will point us back to how we see work today.
